Reading a Shaft Sheet and a Grip Spec Together
Shaft flex, weight, and torque shape how a club loads and releases. Grip texture, core size, and taper shape whether your hand can control that release in the first place. Here's how the numbers on both sides connect.
Cord, Rubber, and Hybrid, in Plain Terms
Full-cord grips weave coarse fiber into the rubber compound, which grips well when hands or conditions are wet but can feel abrasive on bare skin over a long round. All-rubber grips are smoother and softer, favored in dry conditions or by golfers with sensitive hands, but they can turn slick fast once palms start sweating. Hybrid builds put cord in the lower hand, where grip security matters most, and smooth rubber in the upper hand for feel.
Neither category is universally "better" — the right choice depends on your typical palm moisture, the season, and how much texture your skin can tolerate over eighteen holes.
Undersize, Standard, Midsize, or Oversize
Undersize
Encourages more hand and wrist action through impact — useful for players intentionally working a draw, but risky for golfers already prone to hooking.
Standard & Midsize
Where most golfers land once palm width and finger-to-palm contact are measured correctly, rather than guessed from glove size alone.
Oversize
Reduces hand action and grip tension, which often helps golfers managing arthritis or a tendency to over-grip under pressure.
The Numbers Behind the Shaft Label
Flex ratings (Ladies, Senior, Regular, Stiff, Extra Stiff) are not standardized across manufacturers — a "Stiff" shaft from one brand can play differently from a "Stiff" shaft from another. Flex describes how much a shaft bends and releases relative to your swing speed and tempo, not a fixed physical constant.
Torque measures how much a shaft twists under load; lower torque generally means a more stable feel for faster, aggressive swings, while higher torque can add feel and a softer release for smoother tempos. Weight interacts with both: a lighter shaft in the same flex rating typically plays softer and adds clubhead speed, while a heavier shaft plays firmer with more control.
